How to Enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower with Young Children

Let’s go stargazing with little ones – no telescopes needed!

The Perseid meteor shower is a magical night‑sky spectacle. In 2025 in the UK, you can see Perseids from 17 July to 24 August, with the peak on the night of 12 August.

This night-time spectacle is best viewed between midnight and 5.30am., which isn’t ideal for children. But there are still fun ways to experience it earlier in the evening, right from your back garden or window, especially if you’re away from bright lights.

How to watch the Perseid meteor shower with children

When to look for the perseid meteor shower

  • Meteor activity will be highest on the night of 12th August 2025, especially between midnight and 5:30 a.m., but it’s worth looking a few days before, too.
  • Check the weather – a clear night means a better chance of spotting something exciting!
  • Peek outside together between 9 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. The sky could be dark enough to spot meteors then if weather conditions are right.

  • In 2025, the peak of the Perseids is just three days after a full Moon, so the sky will be brighter. This isn’t ideal for meteor-spotting, but you might be lucky!

How to make it fun for kids

  • Give your eyes time to adjust to the dark. It takes about 15 minutes!
  • Make it special with deckchairs, cushions, bean bags, blankets or sleeping bags, so little ones can lie back comfortably and warmly.
  • Share a space-themed bedtime story while you wait.
  • Look all over the sky – meteors can appear anywhere!
  • Turn stargazing into a playful activity, counting how many ‘shooting stars’ they spot.

If staying up late isn’t practical…

  • Watch during early evening in the days just before peak. You might spot something!

  • Keep it short: even few minutes outside is exciting.

  • Make follow‑up crafts or drawing sessions to keep the wonder going indoors.

Why the perseid meteor shower is special

  • Expect up to 60–100 meteors per hour during the peak

  • They’re easy to enjoy with the naked eye. No special gear is needed, just time and a dark sky.

  • Enjoying the Perseid meteor shower with little kids is absolutely possible, even if they’re too young for a full‑blown astronomy session. With a comfy setup, a short outing during early evening, and a sprinkle of magic, parents can share one of nature’s most beautiful sky shows with their little ones
  • Happy stargazing from your garden or holiday balcony!
